Devdutt Padikkal scores 167, joins Dravid and Pujara in record list

Devdutt Padikkal was dismissed for 167 off 230 balls on the second day of the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. The 24-year-old left-hander, batting at number three, hit 15 fours and a six. He became only the third Indian to score 150 or more against Sri Lanka from that position, joining Rahul Dravid (177) and Cheteshwar Pujara (153), as reported by The Times of India. Times Now added that Padikkal broke Pujara's record as the youngest Indian to score 150 in Sri Lanka, aged 26 years and 39 days, and is only the fifth Indian overall to achieve that feat there.

Padikkal was stumped by wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella off Prabath Jayasuriya after stepping down the track. He received a standing ovation from the Galle crowd. He had been handed the number three role after Sai Sudharsan's injury, and his maiden Test century made him the first Indian to score an international century on Independence Day, according to The Times of India. Times Now reported it as the first Indian Test century on August 15.

After play resumed following rain delays, India lost Rishabh Pant for 39 and KL Rahul for 82. Pant was caught at short mid-off off Keshara Nuwantha, while Rahul, who had retired hurt on Day 1, was caught at short leg off the same bowler.
