East Bengal beat SC Delhi on penalties, reach Durand Cup final
East Bengal FC reached the Durand Cup final for the 28th time after beating Sporting Club Delhi 5-3 on penalties in Kolkata on Wednesday. The match ended 0-0 in regulation time, with East Bengal dominating possession and hitting the woodwork three times but failing to score.
Goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill saved SC Delhi's first penalty from Juan Sebastian Pena, and East Bengal converted all five of its attempts. The tournament rules do not provide for extra time, so the game went straight to a shootout.
East Bengal will play the winner of Thursday's second semifinal between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and NorthEast United FC in the final on August 23 at the same venue, Salt Lake Stadium.
Indian Opinion Analysis
All seven sources report the same facts: a goalless regulation-time draw followed by East Bengal winning 5-3 on penalties, with goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill saving the decisive spot-kick. The coverage is uniform straight reporting with no discernible editorial stance. Every outlet led with the penalty-shootout result, added the key saves and missed chances, and noted East Bengal's 28th final appearance. No source emphasised one narrative over another, and none framed the match as an upset or a favourite's failure. The neutral tone suggests wire-agency copy was widely used. A careful reader can trust that the factual account is complete: three woodwork strikes by East Bengal, a saved penalty in regulation time by Gill, and a flawless shootout. The Durand Cup final on August 23 now pits East Bengal against the winner of the second semifinal between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and NorthEast United FC.
