Jharkhand students burn effigies, govt calls fresh talks on August 17

On the 23rd day of their protest, job aspirants in Ranchi burnt effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, accusing the ruling alliance of failing to act on their demands. The agitation, led by the JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch, demands a CBI probe into alleged irregularities in recruitment exams conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission, and cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination.

Later on Sunday, the Jharkhand government invited the protesters for a fresh round of talks on Monday, August 17, at the State Guest House. The invitation marks the seventh round of discussions, six previous rounds have failed to yield a breakthrough. The Times of India reports the talks are scheduled for 2 pm, while The Hindu says they will last one hour. Protest leader Ravindra Paswan confirmed the forum will attend but said their core demands remain unchanged.

The protesters have issued an ultimatum: if their demands are not met by August 18, they will gherao the Chief Minister's residence on August 20. The government has announced measures to improve transparency in recruitment, including a time-bound exam calendar and timely publication of answer keys, but the students remain unconvinced.
