Kerala launches ‘Anbu Veedu’ respite care for special needs children

Kerala's social justice department has launched 'Anbu Veedu', a respite-care initiative for children and persons with special needs. The scheme aims to temporarily accommodate children with autism, intellectual disabilities, neuro-developmental disorders, or those bedridden, in family homes where a child with a similar disability already lives, providing a home-like environment and care from experienced caregivers.

Social Justice Minister V E Abdul Gafoor said the initial plan was to use empanelled institutions, but the government now offers personalised care in family homes. A senior official explained that families caring for a child with a particular disability understand similar needs better, making the transition easier for the child.
