Mumbai vegetable prices surge up to Rs 120 per kg
Vegetable prices in Mumbai have shot up to Rs 80 to 120 per kg after Ganeshotsav and with the onset of Pitrupaksha, driven by erratic monsoon, crop damage and lower arrivals, traders said. At the APMC Vashi wholesale market, prices rose to Rs 40 to 70 per kg from Rs 20 to 50 per kg a week ago.
Balasaheb Badade, president of APMC-Mumbai Vegetable Traders Association, said a break in monsoon rains stressed crops in Nashik, Pune and Satara, causing localised damage and reduced yields. Supply from Maharashtra is scanty, with most vegetables arriving from Gujarat and Karnataka. Onion prices rose to Rs 80 per kg in parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, while green peas reached Rs 100 per kg.
Traders warned prices could rise further if unpredictable weather continues. Households are being forced to cut purchases, with fewer trucks reaching the wholesale hub. A lemon now costs Rs 10 apiece, up from a wholesale rate of Rs 6 to 7, because of scanty supply.
Indian Opinion Analysis
The price spike hits Mumbai households directly in their kitchen budgets, with staples like onion and green peas doubling in a week. The supply squeeze is structural: erratic weather has damaged crops in Maharashtra's key belts, forcing reliance on Gujarat and Karnataka. Traders expect no quick relief as the dry spell persists. The next number to watch is daily truck arrivals at APMC Vashi: if they remain low, retail prices will stay elevated through Pitrupaksha.
