Stock market shut on Tuesday, 20 October for Dussehra
Indian stock markets will be closed on Tuesday, 20 October, for Dussehra, the only festival holiday in the trading week from 18 to 24 October. The break falls right after weekend closures on Sunday, 18 October, and is followed by another weekend on Saturday, 24 October, giving investors a week with only four trading sessions.
Across October 2026, the calendar lists 11 non-trading days. Nine are regular Saturdays and Sundays, and two are festival holidays: Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October and Dussehra on 20 October. Six closures remain in the month: 17, 18, 20, 24, 25 and 31 October.
The holiday list is published for investors to plan transactions around. The exchange advises checking the trading calendar before scheduling settlements close to a holiday.
Indian Opinion Analysis
The holiday list means a shorter trading week for investors managing settlements and margin calls around the festive season. With Dussehra falling on a Tuesday, anyone rolling over derivatives or squaring off positions before the break must account for two consecutive non-trading days from Sunday, 18 October, through the holiday. October's six remaining closures, including weekends, leave only 13 full trading days in the month. The exchange's own guidance to check the calendar before scheduling transactions is the practical takeaway for anyone with expiry-linked positions.
