Bangladesh sets two conditions for Tarique Rahman’s India visit

Bangladesh has told India it must create a 'propitious environment' before Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visits New Delhi, linking the trip to two demands. Dhaka wants India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after the 2024 uprising, and to hand over the accused killers of activist Sharif Osman Hadi, citing a bilateral extradition treaty. India's Ministry of External Affairs says extradition is a legal matter that will follow due process.

The demand came after Hasina's audio address in New Delhi on August 5, which Bangladesh said vitiated the process. Rahman, who took office in February, has already visited Malaysia and China. New Delhi has invited him for a bilateral visit and for the BRICS summit outreach in September. Bangladesh says it is awaiting India's response to its requests.
