BCI chairman apologises, NLSIU students oppose CJI’s convocation presence

Bar Council of India (BCI) chairman Manan Kumar Mishra apologised on Saturday after Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud (CJI Kant) censured the council over its handling of a row at NALSAR University of Law. DNA India reported that Mishra said students are always free to express their views, following the CJI's rap.

Meanwhile, students of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru have opposed the CJI's presence at their upcoming convocation. Deccan Herald reports that the students demanded the BCI tender an unconditional apology to the student and faculty community at NALSAR for attempting to infringe their fundamental right to free speech. The two law schools are linked through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) system.

The BCI had earlier issued a show-cause notice to NALSAR over a student event that the council deemed objectionable. The CJI had criticised the notice during a court hearing. The convocation at NLSIU is scheduled for later this month.
