Birbhum hotel fire kills 6, many feared trapped

At least six people died when a fire broke out at a hotel near Tarapith police station in West Bengal's Birbhum district early Monday morning, reports Aaj Tak. The blaze started around 4 am, when many guests were asleep. The hotel was full of pilgrims visiting for the last Monday of the holy month of Sawan.

Fire engines reached the spot and brought the fire under control. Local residents fear the death toll may rise, as several people are reported injured. The cause of the fire is not yet clear, though initial reports suggest a short circuit. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing.
