Centre, Arunachal intensify FMD containment in Dibang Valley

Joint teams of the Centre and Arunachal Pradesh have stepped up operations to contain a Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak affecting livestock in Dibang Valley. A Rapid Response Team from Itanagar arrived in Anini on August 8 with medicines, followed by a district informatics officer on August 11 to lead field visits and sample collection.

A central team led by Joint Commissioner Dr V K Teotia reached the district on August 13 and conducted field assessments, covering Acheso, Angrim Valley, and other areas. Officials treated infected animals, collected diagnostic samples from Mithuns, pigs and goats, and briefed Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel on biosecurity. Anini MLA Mopi Mihu provided medicines and logistical support, while Zilla Parishad chairperson Sadhu Mihu accompanied experts to engage communities.

The central team departed on August 17 with samples for laboratory examination. District Veterinary Officer Dr D Riba confirmed that RRTs will stay until the outbreak subsides, with fresh relays if needed. The department stressed that biannual vaccination is the primary defence and urged livestock owners to cooperate with upcoming drives and report suspected infections.
