Chandipura virus kills nearly 30 in Gujarat, Mumbai on alert

Nearly 30 people have died from Chandipura virus in Gujarat, with cases also reported in Rajasthan. The Union health ministry has deployed a National Joint Outbreak Response Team to both states to assist with surveillance, diagnosis, case management and control measures. The virus, first identified in a Maharashtra village, last caused a major outbreak in 2024.

Maharashtra has reported no cases so far, but Mumbai hospitals have stepped up vigilance due to the outbreak in neighbouring Gujarat and the large number of patients who travel to the city for treatment. Dr Tushar Palave of Cama and Albless Hospital said no specific guidelines have been received but information on symptoms and treatment has been shared.

Chandipura virus is transmitted by sandflies and small mosquitoes and can progress to acute encephalitis within 24-48 hours. Children aged nine months to 15 years are most vulnerable. There is no specific antiviral or vaccine, and doctors warn that delayed hospitalisation has been a factor in fatalities. Vector control and early detection are key.
