Congress councillor runs into MCD chairman’s office after attack
A Congress councillor, Hazi Zarif, allegedly ran into the office of MCD zone chairman and BJP leader Pankaj Luthra in northeast Delhi after being attacked by a group of people. The incident occurred around 3.30pm on Wednesday, and a scuffle broke out inside the office, damaging property. Luthra said he and others intervened to break up the scuffle, adding that no BJP member was involved.
A purported video shows a chair being thrown while two policemen appear to protect a person. One of Zarif's associates alleged he was attacked by AAP members, though this could not be verified. Zarif did not comment. The incident follows claims that some industrial units linked to AAP members were sealed by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee after a complaint by Congress leaders, which unverified reports say led to tension between councillors of the two parties.
Indian Opinion Analysis
The incident is the latest flashpoint in Delhi's municipal politics, where the MCD is currently under a fractured mandate with no single party holding a majority. The AAP governs Delhi, the BJP runs the MCD, and the Congress holds a handful of seats. This power structure creates daily friction over local governance issues like sealing of industrial units. The real question is whether the video footage will lead to an FIR naming specific councillors, and what the MCD's disciplinary committee will decide. Watch for the MCD commissioner's report due within a week, which will determine if Luthra faces any administrative action or if Zarif files a counter-complaint.
