Congress questions Modi over no tribute to Zubeen Garg in Assam

Congress deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi on Monday questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not pay tribute to Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg during his two-day visit to the state last week. Modi was in Assam on December 20 and 21 to inaugurate projects including a new airport terminal in Guwahati and a fertiliser plant in Namrup.

Gogoi, who is also the Assam Congress chief, said in a post on X that the PM’s speeches focused on attacking the Congress and presenting a “distorted version of Indian history” but did not mention Garg. He added that Modi neither met Garg’s family nor offered words of empathy to the singer’s fans.

Gogoi contrasted Modi’s visit with that of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who he said paid tribute to Garg at Zubeen Kshetra, met the family, and demanded justice for him. He also compared the PM’s Assam trip to his Manipur visit, saying youth in Manipur felt like “props in a drama” with Modi as director and lead actor, while Gandhi visited Manipur twice and met survivors of violence.
