Delhi University PhD scholar booked for slapping professor

Delhi University has suspended PhD scholar Shubham Singh and barred him from campus after CCTV footage allegedly showed him slapping a professor at Umang Bhawan on Monday morning. An FIR has been registered at Maurice Nagar police station, and a three-member inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the incident.

According to reports, CCTV footage shows Singh waiting near the building entrance before walking towards Law Faculty professor Umang Bhawan and allegedly slapping him. Other students present attempted to intervene. Singh, admitted to the Faculty of Law in the 2024-25 session, has been suspended with immediate effect under Ordinance XV-B of the Delhi University Act, 1922.

The Democratic Teachers' Front (DTF) condemned the assault, calling it the third recent case of violence against teachers on campus. DTF criticised the administration's response as slow and insufficient, and demanded stricter action. The teachers' body also recalled a similar incident in October 2025 when DUSU joint secretary Deepika Jha slapped a professor at Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar College.
