Father wades into drain after son falls chasing kite

A 15-year-old boy, Mithun Kumar, died after falling into an open drain in southeast Delhi's Jasola while chasing a kite on Saturday morning. His father, Awadhesh Kumar, waded into the drain himself with a stick as rescue teams struggled to locate him. The body was recovered from the Agra Canal on Tuesday, more than 72 hours later.

Multiple agencies were involved in the search: Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, NDRF, and DDMA. The fast-flowing water and swampy terrain hampered operations. TOI reports the Delhi Jal Board said the drain was handed over to MCD, while MCD said the irrigation and flood control department was responsible. Locals said people fall into these drains every few months and demanded a wall be built.

Mithun was a Class VIII student at a government school. His mother was a domestic help and his father a sanitation worker, both were at work when he fell.
