Gambhir says he only cares about winning trophies for India

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has said he is unfazed by criticism and outside noise after a string of poor results, asserting that his only focus is winning trophies for the country. Since taking over in July 2024, India have lost two home Test series against New Zealand and South Africa and were thrashed by Australia away. The only bright spot has been a 2-2 draw in England.

At a pre-match press conference in Colombo, Gambhir said: "My job is to win trophies. That's all I believe in and care for. That is the difference between me and everyone. I don't care about views or likes." He dismissed India's fifth place in the World Test Championship standings, calling it a transition phase, and backed young players like Manav Suthar and Devdutt Padikkal. He also hinted India will stick with a five-bowler strategy in the second Test against Sri Lanka starting Sunday.

Gambhir confirmed discussions with selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar about team strategy and player injuries. He urged authorities to consider three-match Test series for better competitive balance. On under-fire spinner Kuldeep Yadav, Gambhir said the captain and management decide who bowls based on conditions.
