Heavy rains flood Nirmal and Asifabad, Godavari swells

Heavy rains across Telangana's Nirmal and Kumuram Bheem Asifabad districts from Tuesday night to Thursday flooded roads and cut off tribal villages. In Nirmal, streams in Pempi and Kadam mandals overflowed, severing road connectivity. Irrigation officials opened 16 of the 18 gates at the Kadam Narayan Reddy Project, releasing 1.5 lakh cusecs of water into the Godavari. Two gates of the Sadarmat Barrage were also lifted.

In Asifabad, floodwaters flowed over the Pittaguda bridge in Lingapur mandal, blocking access to four villages. Authorities opened five spillway gates of the Kumram Bheem project and gates at the Vattivagu project. A 24/7 flood control room was set up in Nirmal, Asifabad district Collector Haritha and SP Nitika Pant inspected affected areas. The IMD Red Alert remained in force, and schools stayed shut. Both districts reported no casualties as of Thursday morning.
