IINRG renamed National Institute of Secondary Agriculture
The Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gums has been renamed the National Institute of Secondary Agriculture, effective September 20, 2022. The decision was approved by the Governing Body of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research Society at its 256th meeting.
The Ranchi-based institute will expand its work beyond lac and other natural resins and gums to secondary agriculture. This includes value addition, crop-residue utilisation, processing to extend shelf life, and activities such as beekeeping, mushroom cultivation, lac culture and agri-tourism. The move is aimed at supporting rural industrialisation and improving farmers’ incomes.
The institute traces its origins to the Indian Lac Research Institute, established in 1924. It was renamed the Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gums in 2007 after its mandate expanded beyond lac.
Indian Opinion Analysis
The renamed institute’s economic effect will depend on what happens beyond research. Farmers and rural enterprises need processing units, reliable buyers, quality standards, storage, transport and access to finance for value addition to generate steady returns. The wider mandate may also require partnerships across agriculture, food processing, animal products and rural industries. The practical signal to watch is the institute’s next set of programmes, technologies or partnerships under the new mandate.
