IIT-Bombay allows students to design own degrees

IIT-Bombay's Centre for Multidisciplinary Education (CME) lets students build their own degree after their first year. Instead of a fixed path, they can choose courses across departments. The first batch will graduate in August 2025.

CME head Prof Rajesh Zele said students often realise after joining that they do not want to follow their JEE-chosen discipline. The programme ensures a broad foundation in six areas, including humanities, design, and environmental studies, before students specialise.

Student Rushikesh Shinde switched from mathematics to CME in 2024 to combine AI and music technology. He later secured an internship at Expedia Group. Enrolment has grown from 12 to 22 students across three batches.
