SC to hear TN Cauvery water plea Monday; Karnataka holds meet

The Supreme Court will hear on Monday a plea by the Tamil Nadu government seeking directions to Karnataka to release its share of Cauvery water, the Deccan Chronicle reports. The hearing comes after the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) rejected Karnataka's appeal and upheld an order by the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee to release 3,500 cusecs daily for 15 days from July 29.

The Hans India says Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar chaired a high-level meeting after the CWMA order and has called an all-party meeting on August 2 to chart the state's response. Karnataka argues that its reservoirs are inadequate and faces a drinking water crisis, while Tamil Nadu claims the quantum allocated is far less than its due share and that Karnataka has failed to comply, releasing only 158, 550 cusecs instead of the ordered amount.
