Mohali plans 47 dog-feeding points, seeks land for shelter after objections

The Mohali municipal corporation (MC) has proposed 47 designated feeding points for community dogs across 14 sectors, phases and areas, following a Supreme Court ruling in August 2025 that directed municipal authorities to create dedicated feeding spaces in every ward and prohibit street feeding. The move aims to prevent aggressive dog packs from gathering in residential and children's play areas, as the district recorded 9,710 dog-bite cases in the first four months of 2026, up from 20,562 in all of 2025 and 19,252 in 2024, according to the civil surgeon's office.

The locations, spanning sectors including 66, 70, 77, 78, and various phases, are not final. The MC has invited objections and suggestions from residents, resident welfare associations, feeders, and other stakeholders within a week from August 14, asking them to flag concerns about safety, accessibility, and conflict, and to suggest alternative sites with GPS coordinates.

Separately, the MC has sought transfer of one acre in Sector 57 from the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) for a dog shelter and animal birth-control facility, after residents' objections forced it to abandon a 2.10-acre site in Phase 3 Industrial Estate. The proposed site is adjacent to the existing gaushala at Motor Market, and GMADA has been asked to complete the formal transfer.
