Nick Reiner’s trust fund appeal denied under slayer statute

Nick Reiner, who is awaiting trial for the murder of his parents Robin Reiner and Michelle Reiner, has had his request for access to a trust fund worth USD 1.5 million denied. Fiduciaries Paul Kanin and Jodi Pais Montgomery rejected the appeal, citing California's slayer statute, which prevents people who have "feloniously and intentionally" killed someone from inheriting from them.

Reiner had filed a petition in June claiming half the trust should have been released to him when he turned 30. He sought the money for legal fees and basic hygiene products at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles. The fiduciaries argued that no distribution should be made until the court resolves the case, stating that his urgency "arises from the deaths of his parents." If the fund is not given to Nick, it will be split equally between Rob Reiner's other two children, Jake and Romy.

Reiner maintains he is innocent and deserves access. His lawyer said: "The slayer statute requires a determination, not a mere accusation. Nick is presumed innocent." A pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 15.
