Ranipet police return 80 missing phones worth Rs 11.45 lakh

The Ranipet district police have handed over 80 missing mobile phones worth Rs 11.45 lakh to their owners. The return of the phones on Saturday follows the formation of a Cyber Crime police unit at the Superintendent of Police office and the introduction of a cell tracker application for registering complaints.

The cyber crime team tracked the missing phones using their IMEI numbers at regular intervals. When a missing phone is activated, the police alert the user that the device is stolen property. Users then either hand over the phone or send it by courier from other districts and states.

Police said that all complaints of snatching or missing mobile phones are now investigated through the cyber crime cell. The initiative was part of the standard process to trace and return such phones every six months.
