Trump posts old photo with Kim, says they ‘get along GREAT’

US President Donald Trump posted an old photo with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Truth Social on Saturday, saying they "get along GREAT". The image from their 2018 Singapore summit was accompanied by a remark that despite the "unfriendly look" in that picture, there are many where they are smiling.

Trump and Kim met three times during his first presidency, but diplomacy broke down at the 2019 Hanoi summit over denuclearisation and sanctions relief. Trump has since expressed openness to meeting Kim again. In June, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung proposed a phased approach to North Korea's nuclear programme, and Trump said it "could be one way".

Pyongyang has continued to reject denuclearisation, condemning the US and allies after the NATO summit and vowing to safeguard its sovereignty through military capabilities. Trump's message comes amid renewed interest in direct diplomacy and shifts in regional security.
