68 Dead, Including 18 Children, in Zimbabwe Ferry Disaster

Rescuers have recovered 22 more bodies from Lake Kariba, bringing the death toll to 68 after an overloaded ferry capsized on Tuesday. Police said 18 of the victims were children, with 16 aged 10 or younger and the youngest just one year old. The ferry was travelling from Kariba town to remote northwest communities where roads are damaged and public transport is scarce.

Authorities have not said how many people were aboard or how many remain missing. Estimates put the number of passengers as high as 153, while the ferry's official capacity is 90. Zimbabwe's disaster management agency reported that 77 people were rescued. The police list of child victims highlighted that those below ticketing age were not included in initial passenger estimates.

Lake Kariba, the world's largest man-made lake by volume, straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The ageing ferry capsized in strong waves, and the search for more victims continues.
