Army dog Tyson gets I-Day honour for J&K op bravery

Indian Army assault dog Tyson has been awarded the Mention-in-Despatches for bravery during a counter-insurgency operation in Jammu and Kashmir. He was among 89 personnel honoured by President Droupadi Murmu on the eve of Independence Day.

On February 22, 2025, during Operation Trashi-I in Kishtwar district, Tyson scouted ahead and located a terrorist hideout. He took the first bullet while leading the entry, then pressed forward, leading to the neutralisation of three Pakistan-sponsored terrorists by troops of the White Knight Corps, J&K police and CRPF. Tyson was airlifted to Command Hospital Udhampur and has recovered.

The honour formally acknowledges the frontline role of military dogs in counter-terror operations. Tyson is the only animal among the 89 recipients.
