Boat operations suspended in Varanasi as Ganges rises

The Varanasi administration has suspended all boat operations on the Ganges with immediate effect because of rising water levels. The order will remain in force until further notice. ACP Dashashwamedh, Dr Atul Anjan Tripathi, said the water level was recorded at 64.70 metres on Saturday morning and was rising at about 6 cm per hour.

The decision was taken as a safety measure for passengers and boat operators. The Water Police are monitoring the situation. No resumption date has been announced.
