Coding agents won’t replace software engineers, says Datadog CTO

Datadog cofounder and CTO Alexis Le Quoc has said that coding agents are unlikely to make software engineers irrelevant, despite their ability to accelerate development. In an interview with Business Standard, he argued that software production remains a multi-team effort with different roadmaps and priorities, and coding agents can even exacerbate friction between teams.

Le Quoc noted that coding agents have shown remarkable ability: a few hundred dollars spent on a well-defined problem can produce in weeks what three expert engineers would take six months to build. However, he stressed that humans remain essential because business is still run by and for people. Modern software, he added, has become far more complex due to AI models that are inherently statistical, not deterministic, making it harder for humans to observe directly.

Datadog, which has about 100 employees in India, sees a growing need for observability as companies deploy AI applications. Le Quoc warned that running AI without visibility is as risky as running a large cloud footprint without monitoring.
