Delhi records 1,777 H1N1 cases, ICMR says no new strain

Delhi has recorded 2,392 influenza A cases this year, including 1,777 confirmed H1N1 swine flu infections as of Friday, with 114 cases reported on Thursday alone, the health department said. The Indian Council of Medical Research clarified on Sunday that no new H1N1 strain has emerged: the circulating viruses match the A/Missouri/11/2025 strain and have been present since last year.

The national capital's surveillance has been stepped up, but health experts say there is no cause for panic. ICMR scientists noted the virus is mostly self-limiting, though children, the elderly and those with underlying conditions face higher risks. The influenza strains now circulating are well-matched to recommended Northern Hemisphere vaccines for the 2026-2027 season, the NCDC has confirmed.

Doctors advise symptomatic residents to stay home, wear masks in crowded settings, avoid self-medicating with antibiotics and consult a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen. The DGHS has recommended vaccination as a preventive measure that reduces severity of infection. The vaccine is available as an intranasal spray for those aged two and above and as an injectable shot for children from six months, adults and seniors.
