Hassabis to become Google DeepMind chairman, Jeff Dean departs to start new venture

NDTV Profit reported that Demis Hassabis is stepping down as chief executive of Google DeepMind to become its chairman, will be Alphabet's chief scientist and will continue as chief executive of Isomorphic Labs. Alphabet chief executive Sundar Pichai, in a companywide memo cited by Reuters, said he and Hassabis had long been discussing a role that would let Hassabis give his full attention to shaping the future of AGI. Koray Kavukcuoglu becomes DeepMind's vice president, reporting to Hassabis. Separately, Google chief scientist Jeff Dean is leaving, along with researchers Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, to found a startup called Discovery Loop focused on AI-related scientific discovery, Dean telling the New York Times the group might make decisions not purely in a company's financial interest. The report does not establish whether the two leadership changes are connected, and follows earlier reports of delays to Google's Gemini model.
