India face Olympic silver medallist China in Hockey World Cup opener

India will open their 2026 FIH Women's Hockey World Cup campaign against China, the Olympic silver medallists, at Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen on Sunday. The Deccan Herald reports that the team, led by captain Salima Tete, is a blend of experienced players and World Cup debutants.

Salima Tete told the Times of India that the team has worked on fitness, tactical understanding and decision-making under pressure. She said the biggest lesson is that India can compete with any strong team if they stay confident and stick to their plans. The captain emphasised the team's fighting spirit and togetherness, and said they must stay focused and disciplined for the full 60 minutes to overcome China.
