Iranian President to visit Delhi for BRICS summit in September

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will travel to Delhi for the 18th BRICS summit on September 12-13, according to people familiar with the matter. This will be his maiden trip to India as President, set against heightened US-Iran tensions and disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, which has impacted energy supplies to India, the Economic Times reports.

Mathrubhumi adds that Pezeshkian is likely to hold bilateral talks with PM Modi on India-Iran ties and West Asia developments. Iran became a full BRICS member in 2024. India hopes to finalise arrangements for the Chabahar Port during the visit, the Economic Times says. The summit also expects Russian President Vladimir Putin and possibly Chinese President Xi Jinping, reports Deccan Herald.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has been in touch with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi. The Strait of Hormuz security is key for India's energy imports. However, direct oil imports from Iran remain constrained by US sanctions, the Economic Times notes. Pezeshkian is also expected to brief India on peace talks with the US.
