JP Nadda assures Centre support during visit to landslide-hit Mon

Union health minister Jagat Prakash Nadda visited the landslide-affected Mon town in Nagaland and assured Centre support for relief, rehabilitation and restoration, according to Hindustan Times. He was accompanied by Assam minister Ashok Singhal and Nagaland MP S Phangnon Konyak, and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked him to personally assess the situation. Landslides on 19 July, followed by flash floods after heavy rain, killed 11 people, destroyed more than 800 houses and damaged 1,079 others in the district.

Deputy commissioner Wennyei Konyak told the visiting team that roads, bridges and public infrastructure had suffered extensive damage, and that relief camps were distributing food, water, medicines and essential supplies. Seven schools and 15 hostels suffered major damage, affecting 1,300 students who lost study materials and uniforms. The bodies of a student and a mother who were buried in the landslide were never recovered, and the search for them has been called off.
