Kudankulam nuclear plant generates 1.30 lakh million units

The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) has generated 1,30,627 million units of electricity since its first reactor was commissioned in October 2013, The Hindu reports. Site Director Ashok Bhatia announced the milestone during Independence Day celebrations on Saturday, adding that the operational capacity factor of both 1,000 MW VVER reactors now exceeds 101.5%.

Reactor 2 recently set a new station record for continuous operation, beating the previous 638-day record held by Reactor 1. Construction of four more reactors of similar capacity, built with Russian assistance, is progressing: Reactor 3 achieved the ‘Spillage to Open Reactor’ milestone, and the reactor pressure vessel for Reactor 5 has been erected.

As of June 30, 2026, the plant has prevented an estimated 11.22 crore tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Under its corporate social responsibility programme, KKNPP has spent Rs 155.33 crore on infrastructure development in surrounding villages.
