KVS, ex-MLC urge Karnataka to drop second law varsity plan

Karnataka Vidyavardhakh Sangha (KVS) working president Basavaprabhu Hosakeri has urged the state government to withdraw its proposal to establish a Karnataka State Southern Law University in Bengaluru. He said the existing Karnataka State Law University in Hubballi is already functioning with an 'A' NAAC grade and 109 affiliated colleges, but faces shortages of infrastructure and staff. The KVS plans to write to the chief minister against the move.

Former Legislative Council Chairperson Basavaraj Horatti has also written to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar opposing the new university. He said the Hubballi university was established after a long struggle to address regional imbalances, and a second law university in Bengaluru would undermine that spirit. Horatti noted that Bengaluru already has over 10 deemed universities, including NLSIU, and urged the government to instead provide a special grant, infrastructure, and permanent faculty for the Hubballi university.
