Liebmann, Douglass smash 1500m and 50m freestyle world records

German swimmer Johannes Liebmann smashed the men's 1500m freestyle world record at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris. The 19-year-old clocked 14:26.79, 3.88 seconds faster than Bobby Finke's previous mark of 14:30.67. Hungary's Zalan Sarkany took silver, while Liebmann's teammate Oliver Klemet finished third.

American Kate Douglass broke the women's 50m freestyle world record in the heats of the Pan Pacific Championships, touching in 23.49 seconds. The record of 23.55 was held by Gretchen Walsh. Earlier, Douglass swam 51.69 in the 100m freestyle lead-off, just one-hundredth outside the world record.

Liebmann had earlier won the 800m freestyle gold in Paris with a European record of 7:37.59. He becomes the first swimmer under 14:30 in the 1500m. Douglass's performances set up a showdown with Walsh in the 50m final.
