Supreme Court seeks rules for police posting accused images online

The Supreme Court on 18 August 2026 issued notice on a petition seeking guidelines for police posting images of accused persons on official social media accounts. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant heard the matter and made social media intermediaries like X and Meta parties to the case. “Some regulatory regime is required,” Chief Justice Surya Kant observed, as reported by LiveLaw.

In other proceedings on the same day, the court heard Balwant Singh Rajoana’s plea seeking commutation of his death sentence in the 1995 Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh assassination case on grounds of delay. It also took up a petition by advocate Ashwini Upadhyay on the NEET paper leak issue. LiveLaw reported that a plea for legally enforceable minimum support price (MSP) for all notified crops based on the C2 + 50% formula is scheduled to be heard shortly by the same bench.

The court also continued hearing the Delhi Police plea challenging the Delhi High Court order that allowed Devangana Kalita to inspect electronic evidence collected during the investigation but not relied upon by the prosecution in the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case. The cases are listed for further hearing.
