Luigi Mangione pleads guilty in UnitedHealthcare CEO killing

Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty on Friday to two federal stalking charges for the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The 28-year-old admitted in court: 'I shot Mr Thompson in Manhattan and he died.' He faces a maximum life sentence. Sentencing is set for December 18. There is no plea agreement, said his lawyer.

The guilty plea averts a federal trial but leaves a separate New York state murder case pending. Mangione’s lawyers plan to seek dismissal of state charges under double jeopardy law. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office is expected to oppose. The state trial is scheduled for September 8. Thompson’s family called the plea 'an important step toward justice.' Mangione used a 3D printer to make part of the gun, and earlier federal murder charges were dismissed, eliminating the death penalty option.
