Mahua Moitra says BJP workers pelted eggs on her in Nadia

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Wednesday alleged that BJP workers pelted eggs at her during a visit to Tehatta in West Bengal's Nadia district. Moitra shared a video on X showing broken eggshells on her face and claimed that seven to 10 BJP workers, including local office bearers, threw eggs at her despite her having informed the West Bengal Police in advance.

Moitra directly invoked Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Datta, who had earlier told her not to fear eggs when freedom fighters faced bullets. She wrote on X: "Big shout out to Hon'ble Justice Dipankar Datta! MiLord – I came to my constituency for a mtng informing @WBPolice & BJP workers with their help pelted eggs on me. True to your advice I faced them as a freedom fighter faced bullets." The Times of India and Hindustan Times report the incident as a claim by Moitra, while National Herald adds that the Calcutta High Court had recently directed police to provide her additional security. The BJP had not responded to the allegation by press time.

The incident follows an August Supreme Court hearing where Justice Datta remarked that an MP who had "taken the plunge into politics" should not fear eggs. Moitra's petition seeking to appear virtually before police in a hate speech case was dismissed. Siasat reports that police intervened and that Moitra accused them of putting her into a car instead of controlling protesters.
