Meena Kandasamy book tackles deepfake harassment
Meena Kandasamy's latest book, Fieldwork as a Sex Object, examines misogyny, online harassment of women, and the rise of deepfake technology, according to an interview published by Deccan Herald. The book draws on her own experiences and broader patterns of gendered abuse online.
Kandasamy said technology mirrors existing social cracks, with deepfakes becoming a new tool for targeting women. She spoke about how fieldwork as a woman academic often involves navigating sexual objectification, and how digital spaces amplify these dynamics.
The book comes amid growing concern over non-consensual deepfake images and videos targeting women in India and globally. Kandasamy's work adds a literary voice to the debate on technology and gender-based violence.
Indian Opinion Analysis
This is not Kandasamy's first work on gendered violence, her earlier novels and poetry have also tackled caste patriarchy and sexual assault. Deepfake technology has no dedicated Indian law yet, though the IT Act and IPC sections on obscenity and impersonation are often invoked. With deepfake cases rising, from politicians to actresses to ordinary women, the gap between tech and legal frameworks is widening. The next signal to watch is whether Parliament or the Ministry of Electronics and IT introduces specific deepfake regulation in the upcoming session.
