NGT impleads 7 officials in Yamuna sand mining case

The National Green Tribunal has impleaded seven senior district and police authorities as respondents in a suo motu case concerning sand mining near the Yamuna river. The order was passed on August 11, with the tribunal stating that further hearing is required after previously reserving judgment on May 8, 2026. The commissioners of police of Delhi, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar, along with the senior superintendent of police of Baghpat and district magistrates of Outer North Delhi, Gautam Buddh Nagar and Baghpat, have been added as respondents.

The NGT directed the authorities to file responses at least one day before the next hearing on September 15. The tribunal is seeking consideration of action taken by police authorities to prevent illegal mining, as well as formation of a joint task force by the Uttar Pradesh government and quarterly meetings of the task force. In a separate July 24 order, the NGT directed the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board to ensure Noida authority acts on complaints of dumping municipal solid waste and construction debris in wetlands in sectors 137 and 49. That matter is next listed for October 7.
