NGT forms panel to verify illegal burning of medical waste in Aligarh

The National Green Tribunal has formed a joint committee to verify allegations that medical waste and plastic are being burnt illegally in Aligarh’s Civil Lines area. The tribunal said the issue raises substantial environmental questions.

The plea, filed by a retired teacher from Aligarh Muslim University, claimed medical centres at Muzammil Complex generate large amounts of waste that is burnt at night or early morning, causing toxic smoke and serious breathing problems. The NGT also sought responses from the Uttar Pradesh chief secretary, district magistrate, Aligarh Municipal Corporation and the state pollution control board.

The committee, comprising representatives from the Central Pollution Control Board, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board and the Aligarh District Magistrate, must visit the site, verify facts and suggest remedial measures within one month. The next hearing is set for September 25.
