Punjab’s Saanjh Rahat Kendras have registered 1,069 cases in two years, DGP says

Punjab Police's Saanjh Rahat Kendras have registered 1,069 cases and screened 1,656 people over the past two years, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said, according to Hindustan Times. Started with two trained counsellors in Mohali, the centres now operate at civil hospitals in SAS Nagar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib and Jalandhar, offering counselling, legal aid, crisis intervention and rehabilitation to women facing domestic violence and abuse. Yadav cited a woman escorted to safety and her parental home, with legal proceedings begun against the accused, after her husband allegedly assaulted and threatened her, and a pregnant woman abandoned by her family who was treated for nearly two months at PGI, suffered a miscarriage, and was later helped into employment. He also cited the Jagriti programme, under which police sensitised 11,75,010 children across 12,482 schools, and the Women Help Desks initiative's 69,329 outreach programmes over five years. Special DGP Gurpreet Kaur Deo said the wider SAANJH ecosystem, launched in 2011, has strengthened police-public ties.
