Saajan director: Sanjay-Madhuri romance rumours barely registered

Director Lawrence D'Souza has opened up about the persistent rumours of a romance between Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit during the making of their 1991 hit 'Saajan'. In an interview, D'Souza said the team was so absorbed in shooting that the speculation barely registered with them. He recalled an instance where Sanjay would peek through the camera during Madhuri's close-ups, but insisted he never thought anything of it. The director also said he only learned of their reported split from the news and knew nothing about Madhuri's family allegedly opposing the relationship.

Sanjay Dutt had earlier addressed the rumours in a 1993 prison interview, saying he wasn't bothered by Madhuri's denial. He said he apologised to her when reports broke, as she faced public scrutiny for no fault of hers. Dutt also denied dating Madhuri, adding, "I wish I had a scene going on with Madhuri. But I don't." The two actors shared the screen in multiple films, including 'Thanedaar' and 'Khalnayak', and later reunited in 2019's 'Kalank'.
