Jordan Spieth among five tied for lead at FedEx St. Jude Championship

Jordan Spieth shot a seven-under 65 to share the first-round lead with four other Americans at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis on Thursday. The 2015 Masters and US Open winner, who has not won a PGA Tour title since 2022, opened with birdies on five of seven holes including a 40-foot putt at the par-three 11th. The group of five at the top is the largest first-round tie in playoff history.

World number one Scottie Scheffler opened with a 68 to sit tied for 17th. Rory McIlroy, the reigning Masters champion, shot a 74 and is near the bottom of the 69-player field. The top 50 in FedExCup points after this event advance to next week's BMW Championship. Hindustan Times reports the tournament has a $20 million purse, with the winner earning $3.6 million and the runner-up taking $2.16 million.
