Surguja woman carries aged mother-in-law 3 km for pension

A tribal woman in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district walked nearly 3 km carrying her 90-year-old mother-in-law on her back to a bank to collect a Rs 500 monthly pension that had been pending for four months due to incomplete KYC formalities, millenniumpost.in reports. The incident occurred on Friday in the Mainpat development block, and a video of the woman went viral on Saturday.

The woman, identified as Sukhmaniya, who is in her late 50s, is seen in the video walking along a road with her elderly mother-in-law. She told the person recording that a Bank Mitra used to deliver the Rs 500 monthly pension at her home but the service stopped three to four months ago because the KYC process had not been completed. Sukhmaniya, a resident of Jangalpara village in the Kunia area, reached the Central Bank of India branch in Mainpat on foot.

Mainpat Janpad Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Khushboo Shastri said the pension was last delivered at the woman’s home in January. After Sukhmaniya arrived at the bank on May 22 without informing anyone, the KYC formalities were completed and the bank immediately released the pending Rs 2,000 for four months. The official added that from next month, the pension will again be delivered to the woman’s home.
