TVK faces tough Dharapuram bypoll with turncoat tag issue

Dharapuram goes to bypoll on October 6 after P. Sathyabama, who won the seat on an AIADMK ticket in the May 2026 Assembly elections, resigned within a fortnight and joined the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). She is now the TVK candidate, facing a five-cornered contest against DMK's S. Suganya, AIADMK's K. Banumathi, CPI's P. Lakshmanan, and Naam Tamilar Katchi's M. Karthika. Frontline reports that AIADMK supporters have repeatedly shouted "traitor" at Sathyabama during her nomination and campaign events, leading to police booking AIADMK candidate Banumathi and eight others for allegedly damaging Sathyabama's car.

Greatandhra frames the bypoll as the first major test for Chief Minister Vijay, as TVK holds 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly and lacks a majority. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram, as reported by Mathrubhumi, criticised TVK for fielding turncoats instead of its own cadre, though he predicted TVK will win regardless. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami and DMK president M.K. Stalin are both expected to campaign in the constituency. Counting is on October 9.
