Partition films focus on human story over politics

Two Bollywood films set during Partition have released in 2026: Imtiaz Ali's Main Vaapas Aaunga and Rajkumar Santoshi's Batwara 1947. Hindustan Times reports both directors deliberately avoided political rhetoric to focus on personal stories of love, loss and survival. Deccan Herald adds that such films preserve the memory of a generation that is disappearing, telling the tale through memory rather than statistics.

Main Vaapas Aaunga follows a grandson trying to understand his grandfather's first love disrupted by Partition. Batwara 1947 shows a Muslim family in Lahore sheltering a Hindu woman. Director Santoshi told Hindustan Times the film captures both immense courage and heinous acts witnessed during Partition. Imtiaz Ali said he focused on the young lovers' personal pain rather than the national upheaval. Deccan Herald notes that millions of refugees had to rebuild life from nothing, an effort the films honour.

Batwara 1947 released in theatres on August 14. Main Vaapas Aaunga is streaming on Netflix.
