VVS Laxman set for BCCI Director of Cricket role amid Gambhir tension

VVS Laxman is the frontrunner to become BCCI's Director of Cricket, a new role overseeing all cricket operations, with the appointment likely in September, The Federal reports. The former India batter currently heads the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Freepressjournal adds that the move follows senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli criticising head coach Gautam Gambhir's authority to the BCCI. They want a more balanced system with greater cricketing credibility. The BCCI is not expected to sack Gambhir but will create a wider leadership structure, with Laxman as a potential bridge between the coach, selectors, and players.

The Director of Cricket position is a first for Indian cricket. Laxman's experience as a player and interim coach makes him a trusted figure. The BCCI is expected to finalise the role in September.
