Bengal CM orders fresh inquiry into RG Kar rape-murder case

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday announced a fresh inquiry into the 2024 rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, exactly two years after the crime. He said the decision follows a request from the victim's mother, Ratna Debnath, now a BJP MLA from Panihati. Adhikari said the probe will be conducted under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952, after discussions with the chief secretary and a team of experts.

The CM has also ordered a separate police investigation into the hasty cremation of the victim's body, directing the Barrackpore Police commissioner to probe alleged irregularities. He claimed the body was moved up in the queue at the Natagarh Kadamtala crematorium, cremation charges were unpaid, and the required signature of a close relative was not taken. The CBI, which took over the case on a Calcutta High Court order, has already convicted civic volunteer Sanjay Roy. The victim's family has long questioned the CBI probe, and Adhikari said a new CBI team has taken over the investigation.
